Scottish Premier League Winners

Since the advent of the Scottish Premier League in 1998 only two clubs have lifted the title – the Old Firm of Celtic and Rangers. Even in the days of the Scottish League Premier Division, the precursor of the SPL, contested from 1975 – 1998, Rangers (12 titles) and Celtic (7 titles) claimed the crown more times than any other club. Only Aberdeen, on three occasions, and Dundee United, only the once, managed to wrestle the title away from the ascendant teams.

Although Celtic leads the SPL race as far as consecutive titles are concerned, winning back-to-back titles between 2005-06 and 2007-08, it is Rangers that reigned supreme during the days of the Premier Division with no fewer than 9 successive Scottish Premier League wins (1988-89 to 1996-97).

In all the years the leading Scottish football division has been contested, Rangers has won the title 52 times and come in second 29 times, a formidable record indeed.

Swede and former Celtic striker, Henrik Larsson, was crowned leading goal scorer in five of the eleven seasons the Scottish Premier League has been contested, scoring a total of 151 goals. His 35 goals in the 2000-01 season have, to date, not been eclipsed.

A man who is currently making his mark on the Scottish Premier League goal standings is locally-born centre forward, Kris Boyd. In his 112 appearances for Rangers, he has scored a total of 78 goals. Boyd also played for the Scottish National team from 2006 – 2008, scoring an invaluable seven goals in his 15 appearances. He has been the season’s top scorer in the SPL on three occasions and his 32 goals in the 2005-06 season is his best performance to date.
