After each Scottish Premier League fixture, points are awarded as follows:

  • 3 points for a win
  • 2 points for a draw
  • Zero points for a loss

At the culmination of each season, the team with the greatest amount of points on the Scottish Premier League Standings claims the Scottish Premier League title.

Tiebreakers

In the event of two or more teams sharing the same amount of points, the tie is broken by the following title deciders

  • Goal difference
  • Goals scored

Relegation

The club finishing at the bottom of the Scottish Premier League standings at the end of the season is relegated to the Scottish First Division and is replaced by the champion of that division.

European qualification

The top teams in the Scottish Premier League Standings also qualify for European tournaments:

  • The winner of the Scottish Premier League progress to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League
  • The runner-up enters the second qualifying round of the Champions League
  • The 3rd and 4th placed clubs, as well as the winners of the Scottish Cup, qualify for the UEFA Europa League
  • Clubs may also qualify for Europe by way of the UEFA ‘Fair Play’ ranking
