Football League Championship Winners

Unlike the Premier League, that has been dominated by four clubs since its inception in 1992, the Football League Championship has, over the years, crowned 44 different clubs as Football League Championship winners.

Manchester City has been the most successful contestant of the event, winning the title a total of seven times when it was still known as the Football League Second Division (1893-1992) and, following that, the Football League First Division (1992-2004). Since the advent of the Football League Championship in 2004, Manchester City has been contesting the Premier League.

Sunderland has claimed the Football League Championship winner’s title on two occasions since 2004 but only one club has finished in the top six on three occasions, Preston North End. Teams that have finished in the top six on two occasions are plentiful:

  • Wolverhampton Wanderers (2008-09 & 2006-07)
  • Birmingham City (2008-09 & 2006-07)
  • West Bromwich Albion (2007-08 & 2006-07)
  • Crystal Palace (2007-08 & 2005-06)
  • Derby County (2006-07 & 2004-05)
  • Reading (2008-09 & 2005-06)
  • Sheffield United (2008-09 & 2005-06)
  • Watford (2007-08 & 2005-06)
